5 Things Successful People
Do In The Shower

By Nancy Burnett
Updated January 5, 2015

For successful people, there’s no point in their day where their activity and behavior isn’t somehow moving them forward, both in business and in life. While it may sound ridiculous, even the shower can be a place where productivity is born.

Showering and bathing are both pleasing rituals, but unfortunately, too many of us view them as necessary, mundane tasks that are required for the maintenance of basic hygiene. If you truly want to start your day off right, then it’s time that you rethink your morning shower ritual. Here are the five things that successful people do in the shower.

1. Capture Those Creative Ideas

If you’ve often felt that creativity seems to strike when you’re in the shower, you aren’t alone. Showers are a beacon of creative ideas because they create an environment where the two elements essential for creativity are fostered. We are at our most creative when our minds are content and flooded with feel-good dopamine, in addition to when our minds are allowed to rest and be freed from constant thought.

But those moments of inspiration and creativity are worthless if you don’t capture them. To optimize your shower creativity, invest in a waterproof notepad that allows you to jot down your ideas before you even turn off the water. This successful person lifehack will ensure that your ideas don’t get washed down the drain.

2. Listen To Motivational Material

Successful people believe in “downtime,” but they don’t interpret downtime to mean time that is completely unproductive. Instead, they view downtime as a time to improve oneself while not actually working. When you’re in the shower, your mind is completely open and unoccupied. This is the perfect time to listen to your favorite motivational recordings. A waterproof bluetooth speaker designed specifically for shower or bathroom use is an invaluable investment if you want to turn your shower into a creative, productive space.

3. Use The Time To Meditate

Forget what you’ve heard about meditation. To be effective, you don’t have to be sitting in a lotus pose in a dark room. You can get your mind into a meditative state while still doing mundane tasks like bathing or shaving. It’s a skill that takes some fine-tuning, however.

Luckily, meditation can be as simple as learning to ignore other thoughts and be mindful of your body’s presence as you go through your shower tasks. If you can master focusing on nothing other than the way different shower tasks feel on your body and skin, you’ll have successfully taken the first step towards perfecting shower meditation. This morning habit will reduce anxiety and stress, putting you in the perfect mindset in which to begin your workday.

4. Become Mindful of Your Body Language

What is your shower posture? Are you slumped over with a curved spine, reaching lazily for that bottle of shampoo and grumbling about the traffic that lies ahead of you when you leave your house?

That might be your biggest shower blunder. Our body language has a serious effect on our mood and mental state. By merely straightening our posture and holding ourselves in a confident stance, we can dramatically improve our mood and mental clarity.

If you want the simplest lifehack towards starting your day off right, then just smile. By beginning your day with a pleasant shower where you grinned ear-to-ear, you’ll find yourself way less stressed and more ready to take on what lies ahead.

6. Relax

Productivity tips are good. Lifehacks are good. All of the aforementioned tips can help you to turn your morning shower into a productive daily ritual that sets you on the path towards success.

Pin It However, sometimes the tips that we are looking for are so simple that we’re baffled we didn’t see them before. The final tip falls into this category. If you want a productive shower, just relax. Too often, we find ourselves using our shower and bath time to worry, obsess and let our minds go down unproductive paths. If you find yourself doing this in the shower, stop, take a deep breath and just let that stress go. Relaxation is key to an improved mind and mood.

An Improved Shower, An Improved Life

With these tips, you can turn your morning shower into the most calming and productive part of your day. If you incorporate this advice into your morning routine, taking on the day will become a whole lot easier.
