7 Unconventional Dating Ideas To Spice Up Your Dating Routine

Dating should be a way for couples, both young and old, to spend quality time together and strengthen their relationship. Whether you are married or just getting to know each other, dating remains important for couples and should never fall into a routine.

Unfortunately, it is easy to settle into familiar patterns after a while, which can make it very hard to get out of a rut. Dinner and a movie might be fun the first few times, but after a while one or both people in the relationship will be left yearning for something new and exciting.

The good news is that it is possible to rekindle your old spark or even light a new one as long as you are willing to put in the effort.

1. Get The Adrenaline Flowing

While most people’s idea of a good date is something safe and romantic it is also good to get the adrenaline flowing sometimes. If your partner is not the adventurous type and you are still struggling to get out of the movie rut, start gently by watching a horror movie instead of a comedy. Ideally you should opt for an activity that is really scary, though; as unconventional as it might seem it will bring you and your partner closer together.

The reason is that fear also activates the body’s arousal system and releases adrenaline, endorphins, dopamine and other hormones. Studies have found that arousal and attraction can actually be influenced by adrenaline, so going on a date with an element of danger is definitely beneficial. Up the stakes with white water rafting, paintball, roller-coaster rides or other strenuous activities and say goodbye to boring dates. You can even check your local area for any haunted house tours.

2. Combine Fun With Exercise

You don’t have to engage in scary activities during your date to get your heart racing. Doing something that requires physical exertion will also make for memorable dates. Spend some quality time together in nature by taking on a challenging hiking trail together and you’ll get to talk while enjoying the beautiful scenery. You could also rent a couple of bikes and explore nature on two wheels or rent a paddle-boat for some fun in the water. For something extra-unique, see if there are any midnight biking tours available in your area.

3. A Little Friendly Competition Never Hurts

When we think of dating we think of doing something that makes our partner feel special, but some friendly competition can also make for great dates. From mini golf to bowling there are plenty of fun activities for couples to try out. Make things even more interesting by placing silly bets like the loser having to pay for drinks afterwards. For something a bit faster-paced make your way to the local go-kart track for a friendly race.

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Get Silly

There is no rule that states dates have to be super serious occasions. Doing something silly once in a while is a great way to get out of a rut and can be a lot of fun for you and your partner. Unleash your inner child and indulge in all the things you might not even have thought about as an adult. Whether it is going for a game of laser tag or trying on all kinds of silly costumes at a costume shop, it is sure to get you and your partner laughing together. You can even head down to the park with a kite or Frisbee before a relaxing picnic. Why not hit the local arcade for some air-hockey, pinball or some Dance Dance Revolution. Don’t miss out on any carnivals in town, either, as there are always plenty of messy foods and fun rides. The important thing is to have fun, so forget about feeling self-conscious or getting messy.

5. Hit The Road Together

What could be more fun than packing your bag and heading for an unknown destination together. Make a compilation of all your favorite songs to play on the road, and then go on an exciting road trip. Forget about all your usual planning and preparations, and simply go somewhere you and your partner have never been before. Make a point of stopping at every weird attraction you can find along the way. For a truly unique experience avoid any place that either of you has been before, including restaurant chains or fast food franchises. By leaving as early as possible you can make the most out of your road trip and see as many places as possible before returning.

A road trip is a great way to break from the usual routine, and spending time together alone in the car also offers a perfect opportunity to communicate. It also allows you to listen to your favorite tunes together and take plenty of photos along the way to create lasting memories.

6. Don’t Do It Alone

Some alone time is always great on dates, but don’t be afraid to occasionally mix things up and get other people involved as well. Research has shown that discussing personal details of your life with other couples actually brings partners closer together. This could be due to the fact that a positive response from other couples to you and your partner gives you a more positive view of the relationship as well as a fresh perspective. However, this requires the group to engage in deep conversation, so skip the movies and go on dates that allow your group to do just that. Lots of bars also offer trivia nights, which is a great way to spend time with other couples, having fun and learning new facts.

7. Soak Up the Energy

Live shows offer a lot more energy and excitement than watching a movie at the theater, so check your area for outdoor theaters, comedy clubs, live bands or even karaoke bars. Yo
u don’t have to spend a lot of money going to watch the big stadium bands; go check out local bands or acts that you have never heard of. Local sporting events are also a great opportunity to get caught up in the energy of the crowd together with your partner. Having a laugh together at a comedy club is always good, and if you or your partner are feeling brave you could even get up on Pin Itstage if they have an open mic session.
For something a little selfless that can also help forge a stronger bond between you and your partner, why not do some volunteer work together as a date. Lots of people volunteer on special occasions, such as Thanksgiving, but food kitchens and local shelters also need help during the rest of the year. It is the perfect opportunity to help others while still spending time together. You can even go to a blood bank and donate blood together. After all, how many people can say that their date helped to save lives?
