Everyone’s heard that old truism “You are what you eat.” While this isn’t exactly true, it’s not exactly false, either.

The foods you choose to consume can affect both your physical and your emotional health. Instead of mindlessly munching on junkie foods, choose smart, opting for foods that make you feel good on the inside and help you look good on the outside. Start your diet makeovers with some of the best-of-the-best edibles: superfoods!

1. Salmon

Salmon falls into the category of “oily fish,” which is a very healthy category of protein. This health friendly fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids. These acids improve circulation, reduce inflammation and help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

2. Tomatoes

Tomatoes offer a hearty dose of lycopene. This antioxidant is a rare one that offers lots of benefits. Studies show that lycopene can protect the skin against UV rays, lower cholesterol and prevent some cancers. As an added bonus, these juicy reds also contain potassium, fiber and vitamin C.

Because dehydration can have a negative effect on brain function, consuming water regularly is vital to sustained mental health and maintaining cognitive functions.
