But life hasn't always been this way...

I grew up in an affluent area in Long Island, NY. Although my parents were very rich with love, they struggled financially. At a very young age, I attached my self worth to my family's net worth.

While growing up, I stuffed my face with food to hide from the feeling of unworthiness. I was a rebel without a clue... Acting out in school and hanging around the wrong crowd looking for approval. That was a crash course heading in the wrong direction FAST.

During my teens, I was arrested for fighting, selling drugs, and twice for driving while intoxicated. My parents and teachers didn't know what to do. They constantly dragged me to various psychologists and psychiatrists so they could "figure me out." All these professionals did was make matters worse by prescribing antidepressants to numb the pain.

As high school came to an end, there was tremendous pressure to go to college. I had a dream to be an entrepreneur and had no clue what to do next. I spent 13 years in school and felt unequipped for the real world. How equipped did you feel after you graduated high school?

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...IT DID!

Every Saturday since I was a kid, I worked with my father at his auto repair shop and used car lot. I had done this for years, learning and earning under the guidance of my dad.

Then it happened: it appeared to be an ordinary day...until all of a sudden, I watched my father fall down hard on the ground - and heard a big "SNAP".

I ran to see if he was ok. When I approached him, he was screaming in pain. His ankle was the size of a grapefruit. I had never seen my father in pain before, and I felt totally helpless.

He was rushed to the hospital. There were so many thoughts rambling through my head. At the time, my mother wasn't working and my brother was only 15 years old.

How was my family going to survive?

Without the "breadwinner" of the family able to work, what were we going to do?

Seconds felt like minutes... minutes felt like hours... hours felt like days. After several hours of waiting... the doctors told us that he would be bedridden for at least 12 months.

We couldn't afford him missing work for 12 hours let alone 12 months. We eventually had a family talk and agreed that I would take over the businesses until my father was able to get
back on his feet.

Consider this: up until that point, my life was a wreck. Now, all of a sudden, I was in charge of running two businesses and nine employees - most of whom were more than twice my age.

Monday morning came fast and I arrived at work as the "boss". I wish I could say I was welcomed with open arms. Actually, the employees were less than thrilled with the idea that the boss's "brat son" was going to run the show. Can you imagine how I felt?

After stumbling and figuring things out...

Everything was going pretty smooth. I was getting into the groove and I was doing a heck of a job, if I do say so myself.

Eighteen months went by and my father was on his feet and ready to get back to work. The challenge was that it was now "my ship" and there was no room for two captains to take charge.

Since it was his to begin with, I was happy to pass the leadership back to him. He was extremely generous and asked me if I wanted the businesses. I declined and decided to find my own path.

You know what it's like to start all over again...Right?

Here I was, 20 years old, no college degree and had no idea what to do next. My dream of being an entrepreneur was even stronger now. After several months of paralyzing fear of what to do next, I took the bold leap of faith and started a business with friends.

The process was so much fun - we started several. Over the next few years we sold oxygen bar equipment, had a direct marketing company, an online dating website and more.

We found success at a very young age. In only our second year in business, we were grossing more than a million dollars in sales.

This was like putting candy in a baby's hand. We spent even more than we made. One summer we spent $30,000 just on partying in nightclubs. One friend leased a Mercedes convertible, another friend got a Corvette, and I got a brand new Lincoln Navigator.

We were seeking fulfillment and found it in all the wrong places. The truth was, we were never taught how to build a sustainable business. Even worse, we had no clue as to how to handle our money!

What happens next will shock you!

It was July 2nd, 2004, and another typical day at the office. I was on the phone with a client when one of my partners came into my office and was white as a ghost. I looked at him and knew something was wrong.

Immediately I rushed off the phone to hear what was wrong - knowing it wasn't good news. He began to tell me that our marketing company was being shut down by the Attorney General!

They served us with papers to shut down the company and threatened to arrest us personally. We were sending 1 million faxes a week. The complaints from people receiving the faxes were flooding the Attorney General's office and they had to take action.

The feelings of fear filled the air as
we both knew our ship just sunk...

This was serious news in so many ways. At this point, our marketing company was the main source of income for funding the other companies and our lives. There were six partners and six employees who all relied on this business to sustain our lifestyles.

This meant that everything we had worked for was gone. We invested several years of our lives and all of our savings to build it. We made countless sacrifices and bet our futures on this business becoming a success.

Three months later after the Attorney General finished his job, we liquidated our assets and went our separate ways.

Ever been at rock bottom and clawed your way out?

Now here I was 245lbs, $100,000 in debt, and clinically depressed.

Everything I suppressed from my childhood had massively progressed and was right there facing me at this very moment. I was scared, confused and lost with what to do next.

Several months went by and I was feeling really sorry for myself. All of a sudden, one day a postcard came in the mail for a Personal Growth seminar. After reading it, the event seemed to be what I needed. At first, I was skeptical and scared to be let down or worse yet - made a fool of. Sound familiar?

When I asked my family and friends about it, they immediately turned it down. They said, "you don't need that, those things don't work. They are only after your money." There was something about this event that felt right. After receiving many "no's" to my invitations to attend the event with me, I finally got a "yes." I was determined (actually hoping) that by participating in this event, I would get my life back.

I walked into the event with complete amazement. There were so many happy people smiling, dancing, and just having a good time. Admittedly, I was very nervous, although I pushed through and enjoyed the entire four day event. Remember your first event? What was it like for you?

Those four days were the most liberating and freeing experiences of my life. I learned more about life there than I had from living it for 24 years on my own. I finally understood why I was depressed for so many years, why my businesses had failed, and why I was constantly lost and confused.

Over the next several years, I attended and volunteered at 50+ events, read countless books and continued integrating what I had learned. In a relatively short period of time, I lost 40lbs, eliminated my depression and found my purpose in life.

Why didn't it work for everyone?

As I continued growing and producing results, I couldn't understand why other people weren't getting the results they wanted.

People would asked me, "How did you lose 40lbs in a few weeks?" and "How did you eliminate your depression?" The one question that I am asked the most still today is: "How did you find your purpose in life?"
